In 1784, John Cambridge, the son of Francis Cambridge, landlord of the Star Inn was born.
As a young man, John emigrated to Canada where he set up a timber business in Prince Edward Island for the shipbuilding industry.
John called his business “White Star”, named after his father’s pub. The business grew and John reinvested the profits to found a shipping company, which he called “White Star Line”,
Eventually John’s business was taken over, but the new owners retained the name, and later grew into the famous company that went on to commission the building of the Titanic- the rest is history!
