LOCAL WARMTH AND HOSPITALITY
The Star is a friendly pub that has been serving ales since at least 1572 to tourists and locals alike. Our General Manager Lita Ralston is justifiably proud of this gem of a pub and its history. It was the inspiration for the White Star shipping line and there are various items of Titanic memorabilia on view around the pub.
In 1784, John Cambridge, the son of Francis Cambridge, landlord of the Star Inn, was born. As a young man, John emigrated to Canada where he set up a timber business on Prince Edward Island for the shipbuilding industry. John called his business “White Star”, named after his father’s pub. The business grew and John reinvested the profits to found a shipping company, which he called “White Star Line”. Eventually, John’s business was taken over, but the new owners retained the name, and the business grew into the famous company that went on to commission the building of the Titanic- the rest is history!
The Star loves sport and it is also a well-known for its music with live bands most weekends. Keep your eye out for our Themed nights which are pretty legendary! The ever popular Sunday night quiz rounds things off each week. Those looking for food are well catered for at lunchtimes with a variety of homemade specials and an extensive pub menu complemented by the wide range accompanying beverages and cask ales. You will find all Wickwar Wessex Pub Company’s classics including BOB & Falling Star alongside seasonal guest and rotating favourites.
We challenge any ale drinker to find a better pint.
Our function room is available to hire for meetings, parties, birthdays, weddings, celebrations and commemorations. Just have a word with Lita who, together with her team, look forward to welcoming you to The Star Inn very soon. We also have a pool table in the function room which can be hired in 1 hour time slots.
